Book it for the staff and the Library Bar, skip the themed tea if food quality matters more than the photo.

Eden Rock sits on the rock itself, the promontory splitting St-Jean beach in two, and that single fact does most of the heavy lifting here. Rooms range from the Eden rooms up through villas across the island, and what's on offer is less a room category than a piece of the island's original luxury footprint: this is the hotel that started the St Barths legend, and it still reads that way at Remy's Bar at golden hour. The Rock Suite, built into the cliff with waves audible underneath the floor-to-ceiling windows, is the one guests describe wanting to never leave.

Service is genuinely good but not uniformly so: concierges like Clement and Sebastien get credited with everything from last-minute restaurant tables to doctor referrals, and villa guests in particular get looked after down to breakfast delivery and boat charters. But the hotel side of the operation has real gaps. One guest found the front desk prioritizing friends for taxis over paying guests; another had a waiter add an unauthorized $475 tip to the bill; a third had someone scale a balcony railing and break into their room, with the hotel's only follow-up a request for an updated credit card. The villa rental arm has its own horror stories of unresponsive brokers on bookings approaching $300,000. None of this is the norm, but it happens often enough to flag.

Food is a genuine strength at Sand Bar and the beach grill, less so at the main restaurant, where at least one recent diner found a wilted Caesar and a $130 caviar dish rushed out table-side. Book it for the beach, the history, and a suite like the Rock or Jane; go to Cheval Blanc instead if what you want is flawless consistency over personality.
