Strengths & trade-offs
Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru
Strengths
- Baa Atoll location puts guests near some of the Maldives' best manta ray and whale shark territory
- Four Seasons app functions as a responsive team-based butler rather than a single point of failure
- Consistently praised staff and spa across independent stays
- Walkable sandbar at low tide that guests single out as genuinely special
- Rooms and villas repeatedly rated ahead of the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands at a lower price
Trade-offs
- House reef reported as weak or nonexistent by at least one recent diver-focused guest, undercutting the marine-life pitch
- Dining variety and lack of a meal plan option flagged by experienced Maldives guests as a gap versus competitors
- Manta sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed even with the notification system
Post Ranch Inn
Strengths
- Unrivaled Big Sur cliffside setting with 180-degree Pacific Ocean views
- Mickey Muennig treehouse and ocean-glass room architecture creates genuine immersion in nature
- Sierra Mar restaurant's tasting menu and wine program consistently impress
- On-property experiences — falconry, stargazing, guided forest meditation — are genuinely differentiating
- Complimentary stocked minibar, breakfast, and thoughtful small touches signal a generous hospitality ethos
Trade-offs
- Service quality is inconsistent — exceptional for most, disappointingly cold for a notable minority
- Coast House rooms have near-zero soundproofing between units
- Sierra Mar portions feel undersized relative to the price, and flavor can underwhelm
- Spa under renovation and gym remains very small for a property at this tier

|---|---|---|
| Tier | Fat Favorite | Fat Favorite |
| Overall Fat Score | 17Even | 17Even |
| Service | 17.5+1 The app chat to your butler works about as well as texting a friend, and one guest called out Mr. Shenyl's team by name for going out of their way. | 16.5 Most guests describe warm, unhurried staff who go out of their way, like Jose fetching real aloe leaves, but a real minority run into cold, slow or indifferent service on off nights. |
| Design | 16.5 | 18+1.5 The reclaimed wood and steel architecture and treehouse and cliffside rooms are widely loved, though a few call the Coast Houses thin-walled and the base rooms dated for the price. |
| Location | 18.5 The house reef is good enough that guests snorkel straight off the jetty and the villa deck, and the sandbar you can walk out to at low tide gets singled out. | 19.5+1 The cliffside setting above the Pacific, with whales and stars from your own deck, is the one thing nobody disputes, even when they gripe about everything else. |
| Dining | 15.5 The food across the restaurants gets called consistently good, but there's no meal plan option like some competing resorts offer, which stings on a remote island with no other options. | 16+0.5 Sierra Mar's views and breakfast get repeat praise, but portion size and inconsistent execution show up often enough that the tasting menu is safer than the a la carte. |
| Wellness | 17.5+1 The spa and dive center get real praise, with the dive team singled out as knowledgeable, though the manta rays that are the big draw are migratory and not guaranteed. | 16.5 The infinity hot tubs, forest bathing and stargazing sessions land well, but the spa closure and renovation dust during a recent stretch knocked the experience down for anyone booked then. |

The Verdicts
Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru
The case for Landaa Giraavaru starts with the atoll, not the villa. Baa is a UNESCO Marine Biosphere Reserve, and serious divers keep saying the same thing: staying inside it beats commuting to it from anywhere near Malé. Guests who've done both Four Seasons properties, and both Maldives brands, routinely rate Landaa's rooms and service ahead of the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands — one detailed comparison found the Ritz's villas plain for the money, with pools too shaded to actually use, while Landaa's larger rooms and more natural service kept coming up favorably. The manta-phone system is real: guests staying early October describe getting pulled off a meal mid-course for a sighting. A diver who stayed the first week of November got the phone, the wait, and nothing. Migratory animals don't run on a checkout calendar, and the resort is honest about that itself.
Where the pitch gets shakier is right off your own deck. A recent dive-literate guest called the house reef basically nonexistent next to other Maldives stays, which stings more here than most places given how hard the marine-life story is sold — you're booking boat snorkeling, not step-off-the-jetty coral. Dining draws a real split: multiple guests rave about the restaurants across the property, but an experienced Maldives hand flagged thin variety and no meal-plan option, a genuine gap against competitors who offer one. Staff, by contrast, come up as the standout in nearly every account, named individually often enough to trust it, and the Four Seasons app as a same-day-response team beats a single butler more often than not.
Worth booking if the atoll and the diving are the real trip, not scenery for one; travelers chasing a stronger house reef tend to weigh Anantara Kihavah instead. For the room, the service, and a sandbar you can walk out to at low tide, Landaa earns its place.
Post Ranch Inn
Nothing else on this coast does what Post Ranch Inn does: forty rooms strung along a Big Sur cliff, treehouses and glass-walled ocean rooms built by Mickey Muennig so the redwoods and the Pacific never stop at the window. People who drove past years ago and swore they'd come back keep coming back, and the on-property stuff (falconry with a Harris's hawk named Diego, guided forest meditation, stargazing from the 102-degree infinity hot tubs) reads as the actual reason for the rebooking, not filler. The architecture is doing more work here than at almost any hotel we cover. One guest's driver, Jose, brought aloe leaves from his own garden after a sunburn; a server named Andrew delivers coffee before the restaurant opens and remembers exactly how you take it.
None of it lands evenly. Some guests describe a cold, checked-out front desk on the same property, with no obvious trigger for it. Coast House rooms have a soundproofing problem — one couple says they were woken every night by neighbors through walls with no deadening at all, so book a treehouse or an ocean-view suite instead. Sierra Mar has the best view of any restaurant in Big Sur and plenty call it the best meal of their lives, but a steady run of recent reports describe undersized portions and flavor that doesn't match the tasting-menu price, and that's before you factor in the renovation-era spa and a gym that's small for what these rooms cost. Worth pricing in, not worth staying away over.
At well over $2,000 a night, you're paying for a setting nothing else on the California coast replicates, with service that's excellent far more often than not. Book a treehouse, skip Coast House, and go in knowing the tasting menu is as much about the view as the food. On the setting alone, nothing else in Big Sur is close.
