Strengths and trade-offs

Awasi Patagonia

COMO The Halkin

Strengths of Awasi Patagonia

  • Dedicated private guide for the whole stay, built entirely around your fitness and interests rather than a group schedule
  • Standalone villas with private outdoor hot tubs and direct views of the Torres del Paine range
  • Kitchen will build off-menu dishes on request, with an all-Chilean wine list and local ingredients like guanaco
  • Only 14 villas on property, so it never feels crowded even at full occupancy
  • New GM and ownership since 2025 have visibly repaired a rough patch in guide quality and service

Strengths of COMO The Halkin

  • Staff repeatedly named by guests months apart, unprompted
  • Quiet Belgravia street near Hyde Park Corner, still walkable to everything
  • Spacious rooms and suites by London standards
  • Afternoon tea and breakfast consistently singled out as excellent
  • Genuine problem-solving under pressure (missed flights, late-night requests, laryngitis)

Trade-offs of Awasi Patagonia

  • Wood-fired hot tubs can be unusable for days at a time in high wind, though some recent stays report heated piping instead
  • An hour to ninety minutes by road from most trailheads inside the park
  • No pool or spa on property
  • Guide quality was inconsistent during a management transition, and the default dinner menu runs heavier than some guests expected

Trade-offs of COMO The Halkin

  • No real spa or wellness facility to speak of
  • Small and intimate cuts both ways — no grand public spaces or scene
  • Editorial and long-form coverage is thin and dated relative to guest review volume

The verdicts

Awasi Patagonia

Fourteen standalone villas above Lake Sarmiento, each with its own outdoor hot tub and a straight shot of the Torres del Paine range through the window, and a private guide assigned to you alone for the length of your stay. That last part is the real reason to book this over the bigger lodges nearby: your guide builds each day around your fitness, your interests and the weather, not a group itinerary. One guest's guide drove to a trout stream the morning after she mentioned she liked to fish; another's carried a whiteboard on hikes to sketch out the geology on request. When the match is right, it is the best private guiding several longtime guests say they have had anywhere, on any continent.

The flip side is that quality depends entirely on who you get, and for a stretch under a previous management team it slipped badly. One couple's first guide nearly ruined the trip before they were reassigned; a different guest arrived to find the kitchen's default dinner menu heavier than expected and had to learn to ask for off-menu dishes. Current ownership has since replaced the seasonal manager model with a year-round GM and a new CEO, and the stay reports from the past year read close to flawless again, but this is a brand that had a real wobble recently, not a hypothetical one. The wood-fired hot tub is also weather-dependent: several March guests got one or two usable soaks across four or five nights because of wind, though a few recent stays report it piped with heated water and running regardless.

Book this over Explora or Tierra if the private guide and the villa itself matter more to you than being physically inside the park or having a full spa. The drives to trailheads run 45 minutes to 90 minutes each way, and there is no pool here at all. For hikers who want to walk straight out the door, or anyone who wants spa facilities included, the neighbors do that better. For everyone else, this is the villa, the food and the one-on-one guiding in Patagonia done right.

COMO The Halkin

Pammy Liu comes up more than anyone else in the stack of reviews on this place, and for good reason: one traveller missed a flight entirely and she rebooked the room on the spot, no fuss, no charge for the drama. Another checked in with laryngitis and the restaurant's Morris kept her stocked with tea and berries all week so she'd have a voice left by the end of the trip. A late-night laundry emergency got sorted by the night team in minutes rather than met with a shrug. The service is the reason to book this hotel, not a nice extra alongside the room, and it's held steady from last year straight through this spring.

This is a 41-room Edwardian townhouse in Belgravia: no real spa, no grand lobby, nothing to linger in beyond your room and the restaurant. If a gym and pool matter to your trip, they're not here (the Corinthia, a short walk away, has both). What you do get is a quiet street near Hyde Park Corner, rooms that run genuinely spacious by London standards, and a breakfast and afternoon tea that keep getting singled out on their own merits rather than as an afterthought (the coconut waffles come up more than once, and so does Lewis walking guests through the menu at tea).

Book it for a couple marking an occasion or a family with young kids: a surprise birthday cake, a themed drawing left in the room for a five-year-old, an upgrade nobody had to request. Skip it if you want a scene, a big lobby, or proper wellness facilities on site. Small and intimate cuts both ways here, and it's worth knowing which one you're booking for before you do. On the staff, though, the accounts line up: quick to solve a problem, warm about it, and never going through the motions.
