Overall
Overall: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge Score pending, La Residencia 16.5 out of 20.Service Why
Service: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge Not scored, La Residencia 16 out of 20.&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: Butlers and guides get named constantly and praised for warmth, but one guest was folded into a stranger’s private safari with no one course-correcting.
La Residencia: Pool staff get thanked by name for topping up water and towels without being asked, but the front-of-house has stopped strangers crossing the lobby to ask if they need the bathroom.
Rooms & Design Why
Rooms & Design: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge Not scored, La Residencia 15 out of 20.&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: Three camps of thatched, banana-leaf-roofed suites split opinion between romantic and rustic-charming versus tired and due a refurb before the closure.
La Residencia: Two Mallorcan manor houses with dark wood and tile that guests either read as characterful or dated, and the LVMH renovation guests keep referencing has not landed across the whole property yet.
Location Why
Location: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge Not scored, La Residencia 18.5 out of 20.&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: The crater rim setting and the descent onto the caldera floor for game drives is the reason people book, full stop.
La Residencia: A hillside perch over Deia with olive groves, donkeys and mountain views that guests call the best setting they have seen, minus a real beach at the door.
Dining Why
Dining: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge Not scored, La Residencia 15 out of 20.&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: Main dinners land well, but the crater-floor picnic lunch draws repeated complaints for not matching a four-figure nightly rate.
La Residencia: Breakfast and the Miro terrace draw real enthusiasm, but pricing on terrace drinks and Bar Miro’s food quality get called out as out of step with the room rate.
Wellness Why
Wellness: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge Not scored, La Residencia 15.5 out of 20.&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: Fireplaces, deck fire pits and on-site massage get mentioned warmly but there’s no dedicated spa story here, just in-room comforts.
La Residencia: The pool call-button service and a private plunge pool suite are the standouts; the spa gets fewer mentions and one guest called the massage just fine, not great.

This is a place where the crater does the work no other lodge on the rim can replicate: you wake up, descend a few hundred metres, and spend a morning surrounded by wildlife that feels genuinely wild rather than staged. Guests keep circling the same specifics: butlers like Msisi and George, guides like Temu and Daniel who find kills and sightings other vehicles miss, an arrival bubble bath, songs at check-in. The staff clearly take pride in the place, and it shows in the small stuff.
But the picnic lunch on the crater floor is a recurring letdown at a lodge charging close to $4,000 a night, and the property itself was described as tired and overdue a refurb before its multi-year closure. One guest reported suspected food poisoning; another was effectively handed off to a stranger's private safari, sat in the back seat of someone else's honeymoon with no wine list, no water, and a guide who never asked what she wanted to see. That kind of lapse shouldn't happen at this price, and it's worth knowing going in that service here can swing hard between transcendent and absent depending on which team you draw.
Book Tree Camp if you want the quieter, more romantic of the three camps, and go in with realistic expectations about the picnic lunch. This is for travelers who want the crater experience above all else and are willing to accept some unevenness in exchange for it; if flawless consistency matters more to you than the setting, that's a fair trade to weigh elsewhere. For the descent into the caldera and the staff who make it feel personal, book it for the crater, not for a guarantee of a flawless four figures a night.
This is a hillside hotel in the middle of Deia, not a beach resort, and that single fact decides who should book it. What arrives for it: two converted manor houses wrapped in olive groves, a pool team that brings iced water and a vitamin C mist to your lounger before you've settled in, and a breakfast that multiple guests call the best hotel breakfast they've had anywhere. The Poet's Walk through the gardens, the resident donkeys, an in-house art collection tied to the village's history as an artist colony: this is a genuine sense of place, not a generic five-star shell.
The trade-offs are real and worth pricing in before you book. Rooms in the original buildings run traditional Mallorcan, dark wood and tile, and guests are split on whether that reads as charm or as overdue for a refresh (a renovation has been promised for a while and appears to be rolling out unevenly, so ask specifically which building and whether it's been touched). Terrace and bar pricing draws genuine anger in a way that feels avoidable at this rate, and a few recent stays report front desk and restaurant service that swung from warm to indifferent within the same visit. Air conditioning complaints cluster in peak August heat and are worth asking about if you're travelling then.
Book this for a mountain base with a real sense of history, not for beach days: pair it with a stay somewhere on the water if you want both. Ask for a renovated room, expect Deia's tourist buses during the day, and go in shoulder season if quiet matters to you. For the setting, the grounds, and a hotel that treats returning guests and first-timers the same way at the pool, it earns the trip.
We’re Sofie and Nicolas, and we’ve stayed in hotels like these ourselves. Tell us what the trip is and we’ll tell you which one we’d book, and why. We’re not really a booking service, but a few times a year we plan one properly for someone; if that’s what you’re after, say so.
It's just the two of us, so we take on a handful of trips at a time. If we're full, we'll say so. We reply within a working day. The hotel pays us, not you: your rate is the same as booking direct, and the perks come on top.
