The Verdict

What you're paying for at the Bulgari Roma is Antonio Citterio's design and the location facing the Augustus Mausoleum, and both hold up: guest after guest, well into 2026, describes the lobby-to-street transition as genuinely disorienting in a good way, modern and calm against 2,000-year-old stone, with Trevi Fountain a walk away rather than a taxi ride. The seventh-floor rooftop gets named constantly too, and more than one recent traveller ranks it above Rome's better-known terraces precisely because it isn't overrun.

Service is where it gets conditional. Most 2025-26 reviews describe genuine warmth, staff remembering return guests, unprompted upgrades, someone taking the time for a proper property tour. But that's not universal: one detailed spring 2025 account describes no help with luggage for a visibly pregnant guest, a pool closed three of four nights then reopened too cold to use, and a front desk that couldn't handle a basic currency exchange. The gap seems to track with how busy the hotel is, not chance. Room layout is another real trade-off some report wasted space on entrances and bathroom corridors rather than the room itself, and a lobby scent that isn't for everyone.

The 24/7 breakfast and Niko Romito's kitchen are consistently well liked, and the design argument alone (this reads as a genuinely different Rome hotel from the Hassler or De Russie's classic register) is worth it if modern Italian design over old-world grandeur is your preference. Book it for the design and the view, go in accepting that a full house means service can slip.

The incredible value for money sets this hotel apart — the quality far exceeds expectations and the staff is exceptionally warm.

You're not just paying for a stay, you're investing in an unforgettable memory. The staff from front desk to housekeeping is warm, professional, and incredibly attentive, going above and beyond with personal touches. Dining at the hotel offers an exquisite culinary journey with dishes as pleasing to the palate as they are to the eyes. The ambiance paired with impeccable service makes every meal a delight.

I was pleased with my stay — breakfast was great, the room was technologically advanced, and towels were top quality.

Alex EichnerOct 2024

The technological features in the room were impressive, and bath products were excellent quality. Service was energetic, though could use a touch more polish in the dining area and with personalized greetings. The terrace has a lovely view and I'd highly recommend the hotel overall. Everything felt well-executed even if not quite perfect in every detail.

Technologically advanced rooms

The room layout isn't smart with too much hallway space wasted, and we were allergic to the lobby scent.

Lau TinaOct 2024

For a prestigious five-star hotel, I'll skip the expected praise and focus on issues. The room layout wastes too much space on entrance and bathroom hallways, making the actual room feel small. There's no lift to the roof bar, requiring a walk up. We were allergic to the scent used in the lobby and elevators, and overheard other guests discussing this same problem.

We're both worried it's too Italian and not enough of a we're in Japan vibe, but honestly the service quality convinced us.

May 2026

I was torn between Mandarin Oriental and Bulgari for Tokyo, but multiple people told us Bulgari has the best service of all the options. The concern about it feeling too Italian rather than authentically Japanese is real, but apparently you definitely notice the Japanese hospitality influence. When you're staying at this level, service quality trumps thematic concerns.

If you like modern design and Italian contemporary furniture with good service, then you go to Bulgari.

Apr 2026

Your hotel preferences remind me of properties like Royal Mansour and Casa Polanco — sophisticated design sensibility with welcoming service. For Rome, if you appreciate modern design and Italian contemporary furniture paired with genuinely good service, Bulgari is your answer. It's a different beast from Hotel Russie's garden charm or Eden's classic Roman elegance, but the execution is flawless.

I did a site inspection today and the rooftop terrace alone made the visit worthwhile — the views are phenomenal.

May 2026

The hotel is positioned right in front of Augustus's tomb, which creates this incredible historical backdrop. What impressed me about the rooftop is that unlike other Rome terraces that feel overly touristy or crowded, this one maintained a relaxed atmosphere despite having panoramic city views. We stayed for drinks and bites around sunset and it ranked among the nicer rooftop experiences I've had in Rome recently.

We stayed in a two-bedroom suite with a private rooftop terrace — it felt very livable, not overly flashy but really well designed.

Apr 2026

This place feels completely different from traditional luxury hotels in Rome. You walk in and it's calm, modern, and low-key, blending into the historic buildings so well you could miss it. The location is perfect — Trevi Fountain is right around the corner, and you can walk everywhere without feeling stuck in a tourist circus. The rooftop opens in the evening and has great views with a relaxed energy.

I came for breakfast on my birthday and they were paying attention to everything I mentioned — the staff warmth was incredible.

Kevin T.Feb 2026

The staff was always smiling and guided me around the spaces with genuine care. They were listening to every detail of our conversation and surprised me beautifully for my birthday. I felt so welcomed throughout the entire experience, from the moment I arrived until I left. The warmth and attention to detail made this breakfast unforgettable.

This is not my first stay here, and each time I'm reminded this isn't an ordinary hotel — it feels like family.

nir yifrachNov 2025

The warmth, personal attention, and genuine care they show makes this place special. They remember every detail from previous visits and treat you like a close friend rather than just a guest. I received a beautiful suite upgrade, exceptional personalized treatment, and could keep my room late without asking twice. The car service was outstanding and perfectly coordinated. Every department delivers true luxury service.

Elena from the café personally showed me the rooftop bar and restaurants — the service everywhere was exceptional with warm smiles.

D TOct 2025

The staff at every level was outstanding, from the café to the rooftop. What impressed me most was the complete absence of snobbery you sometimes encounter at five-star hotels. Instead, there were genuine warm smiles and helpful attitudes everywhere. Elena went above and beyond, taking personal time to give me a proper tour of all the hotel's facilities and making my visit to the café extra special.

We stayed five days with our children and the staff showed genuine care for the kids — the rooftop bar is breathtaking with 360-degree views.

Ionut GabrielOct 2025

The Marriott management influence is evident and impressive throughout the property. Services were exceptional in every aspect — food, cleanliness, attentive service, relaxing pool and spa. The rooftop may not be the most famous in Rome yet, but it deserves to be with spectacular seven-story 360-degree views. The unique 24/7 complimentary breakfast, available both in restaurant and in-room, is something I've never encountered at any hotel worldwide.

Exceptional services across all areas

Staff care for children
Red flag

This hotel is heavily overrated and a must avoid — we had persistent bathroom flooding and terrible service issues.

Matt BrumbergMar 2025

Nobody helped with luggage on arrival despite my visibly pregnant wife. The bathroom floor floods every shower due to poor design and misaligned doors, creating horrible smells. Housekeeping left all doors open, requiring a bug hunt when we returned. The pool was closed three of four nights, then opened at 67°F — frigid and unusable. Front desk couldn't exchange $20 for euros, and turndown arrived at 10pm while we were in bed.

Bathroom flooding issues
Pool closure problems

What you're paying for here is the spa and the address, and both genuinely deliver. The two-floor Roman Baths, with its sauna, steam room and three plunge pools at distinct temperatures, comes up unprompted in review after review as the best wellness experience in the city, and the palace sits on Via del Corso with the Trevi Fountain around the corner and the Pantheon a short walk away. That combination doesn't really exist elsewhere in Rome at this level. The trade-offs are specific, not vague. Classic rooms run around 300 square feet with no bathtub, and multiple guests call them tight even solo; book a suite or a room with a terrace if the budget allows, because that's where the property actually earns its rate. Service swings hard: plenty of travellers name individual staff, unprompted, months apart, for extraordinary care, but there are also documented failures around special occasions, a proposal derailed by a hot water outage and unsympathetic staff, a birthday with no candle on the cake and a server who walked away mid-order. The design is the real fault line: some find the travertine-and-greenery calm a genuine relief from Roman chaos, others (including architecturally literate guests) find it soulless, more global wellness hotel than anything Roman — that's a taste question, and it splits people cleanly. Notos on the rooftop is consistently praised for cocktails and views, though the spa and restaurant both need advance booking since the hotel won't hold slots for in-house guests. Worth it for the wellness and the location if you book a proper room category and don't need flawless service on a big-occasion night. If Roman grandeur matters more than minimalist calm, look elsewhere in the same neighborhood.
