Doorman after doorman turns up by name across these reviews: Mohamed and Danny at the front door, Waleed finding a junior suite before check-in and sending up coffee while the room was finished, Sofie surprising a couple with an upgrade and amenities, Sergio conjuring the Knightsbridge Pavilion suite on a fully booked heatwave weekend after a family's second room wasn't ready. Crib setups and Kith and Kin baby supplies show up for a one-year-old's birthday without being asked twice. The staff are why people keep coming back, and almost nobody who's stayed disputes it. Cedric Grolet's patisserie and the ABC Kitchens breakfast get treated as near-mandatory, and Knightsbridge puts Harrods, Hyde Park and the King's Road in walking distance in a way few competitors can match.

The rest is shakier. Several 2026 reviews describe upkeep slipping since a management change: a room smelling of marijuana with a baby in tow, a ceiling and shower door in poor repair, pre-arranged flowers and a welcome card that never made it to an upgraded room. The rooftop pool is what guests warn each other about — shared with The Emory next door and marketed as a signature amenity, it's repeatedly described as too crowded to use, and more than one family with young kids was turned away from it entirely during peak periods. High tea and the à la carte menus draw similar complaints, including a £36 club sandwich that struck more than one guest as out of step with what arrived.

None of that unseats the case for staying. At four figures a night without breakfast, you're paying for the welcome and the postcode more than the pool or the tea trolley, and on those two fronts nothing else in Knightsbridge competes. Book it for the doormen and the walk to Harrods, skip the rooftop, and go to Grolet's for breakfast instead of the tea room.

Nothing else on this coast does what Post Ranch Inn does: forty rooms strung along a Big Sur cliff, treehouses and glass-walled ocean rooms built by Mickey Muennig so the redwoods and the Pacific never stop at the window. People who drove past years ago and swore they'd come back keep coming back, and the on-property stuff (falconry with a Harris's hawk named Diego, guided forest meditation, stargazing from the 102-degree infinity hot tubs) reads as the actual reason for the rebooking, not filler. The architecture is doing more work here than at almost any hotel we cover. One guest's driver, Jose, brought aloe leaves from his own garden after a sunburn; a server named Andrew delivers coffee before the restaurant opens and remembers exactly how you take it.

None of it lands evenly. Some guests describe a cold, checked-out front desk on the same property, with no obvious trigger for it. Coast House rooms have a soundproofing problem — one couple says they were woken every night by neighbors through walls with no deadening at all, so book a treehouse or an ocean-view suite instead. Sierra Mar has the best view of any restaurant in Big Sur and plenty call it the best meal of their lives, but a steady run of recent reports describe undersized portions and flavor that doesn't match the tasting-menu price, and that's before you factor in the renovation-era spa and a gym that's small for what these rooms cost. Worth pricing in, not worth staying away over.

At well over $2,000 a night, you're paying for a setting nothing else on the California coast replicates, with service that's excellent far more often than not. Book a treehouse, skip Coast House, and go in knowing the tasting menu is as much about the view as the food. On the setting alone, nothing else in Big Sur is close.
