The spa is the other reason people come back: one guest's contact lens emergency got solved by a therapist who tracked down a lens case and saline mid-treatment, and the hammam gets called out on its own terms often enough that it's clearly not a fluke. Families do well here too, with a kids' club that parents actually praise rather than tolerate, and an ambassador system that handles the small stuff: one guest's lost phone got traced through a taxi driver and returned before checkout.

The gap opens at the waterline. Beach and pool service lags well behind the rest of the property, particularly by September, when one guest gave up after asking three times for a beer that never came. Food and drink pricing is a real sore point too: a chicken wrap near €50, cocktails around €28, and quality that regularly doesn't back it up, including a flat night at the on-site Ferdi Baba. Visit in October and you'll find restaurants and shops closing early for the season, which thins out what the rate is meant to cover once August ends.

Book it from May through September for the setting, the spa team, and a beach scene that still has energy, and go in knowing the beach bars are where the wheels come off. Outside peak summer, or on the outer beach service specifically, price your expectations down accordingly. For the hillside, the hammam, and the way the team on the ground treats you, it's worth booking.

This is the Mandarin Oriental where guests write down staff first names instead of just calling the service "great": Thomas Kong on the front desk, Helmut Roessler running the floor, Georgie Beauchamp on reception. That lines up with a real design choice, too — the all-suite hotel is entered through the same Hanover Square door as the private residences upstairs, so it never feels like a lobby full of strangers. Rooms run smaller than a typical Mandarin Oriental, but the finish holds up: heated bathroom floors, glazing solid enough to cancel out the construction site that sat next door through 2025, and a 25-metre pool downstairs that keeps getting singled out in a city where basement pools this size are rare.

What's missing matters more than what's there. One restaurant, and it only serves breakfast — dinner on property means the rooftop bar (book ahead) or room service, a real limitation at these rates. Breakfast service draws real complaints: one couple left at their table for ten to fifteen minutes before anyone came over, then another wait for coffee, then fetched their own water in plain view of staff. The pool reception has turned up staffed by one person covering the whole area. A few well-travelled guests also mark the building down next to Claridge's or the Connaught: sharp and modern rather than a place with a century of character behind it, a fair complaint if that's what you came for and an odd one if it isn't.

Worth booking for the people who run it, the pool, and a quiet, design-forward base in Mayfair, provided you're not counting on the hotel for dinner or a fast breakfast. Skip it if old-world character is the point of the trip and Claridge's is on the table instead. Book it for the staff and the room itself.
