How they score

Out of 20. The bars start at 10, so half a point still shows.

Overall Level

Overall: La Residencia 16.5 out of 20, Post Ranch Inn 16.5 out of 20.

Service +0.5 Why

Service: La Residencia 16 out of 20, Post Ranch Inn 15.5 out of 20.

La Residencia: Pool staff get thanked by name for topping up water and towels without being asked, but the front-of-house has stopped strangers crossing the lobby to ask if they need the bathroom.

Post Ranch Inn: Falconry sessions and staffers like Derek and Tim get singled out for going far beyond the job, but several guests describe cold front-desk treatment and slow fixes.

Rooms & Design +1.5 Why

Rooms & Design: La Residencia 15 out of 20, Post Ranch Inn 16.5 out of 20.

La Residencia: Two Mallorcan manor houses with dark wood and tile that guests either read as characterful or dated, and the LVMH renovation guests keep referencing has not landed across the whole property yet.

Post Ranch Inn: Treehouses and cliffside coast houses use reclaimed wood and glass well, but multiple guests call the older rooms dated and note thin walls between Coast House units.

Location +0.5 Why

Location: La Residencia 18.5 out of 20, Post Ranch Inn 19 out of 20.

La Residencia: A hillside perch over Deia with olive groves, donkeys and mountain views that guests call the best setting they have seen, minus a real beach at the door.

Post Ranch Inn: 1,200 feet above the Pacific with condors, whales and redwoods on site; everyone agrees nothing else in the area compares, though summer fog can erase the view entirely.

Dining +1.5 Why

Dining: La Residencia 15 out of 20, Post Ranch Inn 16.5 out of 20.

La Residencia: Breakfast and the Miro terrace draw real enthusiasm, but pricing on terrace drinks and Bar Miro’s food quality get called out as out of step with the room rate.

Post Ranch Inn: Sierra Mar’s tasting menu and garden-grown produce get real praise, but portion size, a flat breakfast buffet, and inconsistent kitchen nights come up often.

Wellness Level Why

Wellness: La Residencia 15.5 out of 20, Post Ranch Inn 15.5 out of 20.

La Residencia: The pool call-button service and a private plunge pool suite are the standouts; the spa gets fewer mentions and one guest called the massage just fine, not great.

Post Ranch Inn: The hot pools and forest trails draw consistent affection, but the gym is small and dated and the spa went through a disruptive renovation.

The verdicts

La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel

This is a hillside hotel in the middle of Deia, not a beach resort, and that single fact decides who should book it. What arrives for it: two converted manor houses wrapped in olive groves, a pool team that brings iced water and a vitamin C mist to your lounger before you've settled in, and a breakfast that multiple guests call the best hotel breakfast they've had anywhere. The Poet's Walk through the gardens, the resident donkeys, an in-house art collection tied to the village's history as an artist colony: this is a genuine sense of place, not a generic five-star shell.

The trade-offs are real and worth pricing in before you book. Rooms in the original buildings run traditional Mallorcan, dark wood and tile, and guests are split on whether that reads as charm or as overdue for a refresh (a renovation has been promised for a while and appears to be rolling out unevenly, so ask specifically which building and whether it's been touched). Terrace and bar pricing draws genuine anger in a way that feels avoidable at this rate, and a few recent stays report front desk and restaurant service that swung from warm to indifferent within the same visit. Air conditioning complaints cluster in peak August heat and are worth asking about if you're travelling then.

Book this for a mountain base with a real sense of history, not for beach days: pair it with a stay somewhere on the water if you want both. Ask for a renovated room, expect Deia's tourist buses during the day, and go in shoulder season if quiet matters to you. For the setting, the grounds, and a hotel that treats returning guests and first-timers the same way at the pool, it earns the trip.

Post Ranch Inn

The case for Post Ranch Inn is the cliff itself: rooms tucked 1,200 feet above the Pacific where you watch condors ride thermals below your deck and whales breach past your breakfast table. Nobody argues with the setting. The Tree House and Coast House rooms disappear into the landscape rather than sitting on top of it, and the falconry demonstration and the forest trails through old-growth redwood genuinely earn the time you give them. Sierra Mar, the lone restaurant, backs it up with produce from an on-site garden and a wine list worth asking to see the extended version of.

Where it costs you is in the gaps between the big moments. Treatment swings from a staffer tracking down fresh aloe leaves for a sunburn to a front desk that won't budge on a four-hour late checkout even at low occupancy, quoting a half-day fee on the spot. A mandatory service charge gets added on top of rates already north of $2,000 a night, which a number of guests find galling when they're also expected to tip in the restaurant. The gym is small and tired, the older rooms can feel dated next to the newer builds, and book an ocean-view room in June through August and you're gambling: the coastal fog can sit there for your entire stay and nobody on staff will tell you that going in.

Three or four nights is the right length; a full week turns repetitive unless you're pairing it with Carmel or just want to do nothing. This isn't the place for anyone who wants Four Seasons-level polish on every interaction, or a hotel that explains its pricing before you ask. It's for a couple who wants one specific, unrepeatable view and is willing to pay what this stretch of coastline costs to sit still on. Book it for the cliff and the quiet.
