How they score

Out of 20. The bars start at 10, so half a point still shows.

Service +1.5 Why

Service: COMO The Halkin 18.5 out of 20, The Dolder Grand 17 out of 20.

COMO The Halkin: Staff like Pammy and night-duty Raskmit turn up in review after review for solving problems on the spot, from a missed flight to a last-minute laundry request.

The Dolder Grand: Nadja and doorman Dario get named for genuine warmth, but a currency-conversion dispute and one guest treated as low-priority after arriving by regular car show it isn’t universal.

Rooms & Design +1.5 Why

Rooms & Design: COMO The Halkin 16.5 out of 20, The Dolder Grand 18 out of 20.

COMO The Halkin: Rooms lean spacious and quietly modern rather than showy, with marble bathrooms and granite tiles doing the talking.

The Dolder Grand: The old wing’s plain white rooms draw complaints next to the new wing’s Dalí and Bundestag-architect design, so ask which side you’re booked into.

Location +1 Why

Location: COMO The Halkin 18 out of 20, The Dolder Grand 17 out of 20.

COMO The Halkin: A quiet Belgravia side street that still puts you steps from Hyde Park Corner and the Tube, with the soundproofing to prove it.

The Dolder Grand: The Adlisberg hillside setting and forest views come at the cost of a 10-minute drive into central Zurich, with no walk-in option.

Dining +0.5 Why

Dining: COMO The Halkin 17 out of 20, The Dolder Grand 16.5 out of 20.

COMO The Halkin: The afternoon tea and coconut waffles get singled out repeatedly, with Lewis and Morris named for making the room feel personal rather than routine.

The Dolder Grand: Salz draws repeat brunch visits and praise for the bircher muesli at breakfast, but at least one guest called the dinner menu boring and the schnitzel forgettable.

Wellness +2.5 Why

Wellness: COMO The Halkin 14 out of 20, The Dolder Grand 16.5 out of 20.

COMO The Halkin: Guests mention the spa-scented bathrooms more than any actual wellness facility, suggesting this isn’t the reason to book.

The Dolder Grand: The spa is called career-best by more than one traveller, but a separate account describes a cramped, overcrowded relaxation room and an opaque pricing structure on facials.

The verdicts

COMO The Halkin

Pammy Liu comes up more than anyone else in the stack of reviews on this place, and for good reason: one traveller missed a flight entirely and she rebooked the room on the spot, no fuss, no charge for the drama. Another checked in with laryngitis and the restaurant's Morris kept her stocked with tea and berries all week so she'd have a voice left by the end of the trip. A late-night laundry emergency got sorted by the night team in minutes rather than met with a shrug. The service is the reason to book this hotel, not a nice extra alongside the room, and it's held steady from last year straight through this spring.

This is a 41-room Edwardian townhouse in Belgravia: no real spa, no grand lobby, nothing to linger in beyond your room and the restaurant. If a gym and pool matter to your trip, they're not here (the Corinthia, a short walk away, has both). What you do get is a quiet street near Hyde Park Corner, rooms that run genuinely spacious by London standards, and a breakfast and afternoon tea that keep getting singled out on their own merits rather than as an afterthought (the coconut waffles come up more than once, and so does Lewis walking guests through the menu at tea).

Book it for a couple marking an occasion or a family with young kids: a surprise birthday cake, a themed drawing left in the room for a five-year-old, an upgrade nobody had to request. Skip it if you want a scene, a big lobby, or proper wellness facilities on site. Small and intimate cuts both ways here, and it's worth knowing which one you're booking for before you do. On the staff, though, the accounts line up: quick to solve a problem, warm about it, and never going through the motions.

The Dolder Grand

The pitch is a castle on a hill above Zurich, with a Norman Foster wing grafted onto the 1899 original, and it mostly delivers. Guests who've stayed three, four, a dozen times keep coming back for the same three things: the view over the city and lake from the balconies, staff who remember names and birthdays years later, and a breakfast people plan mornings around, the bircher muesli in particular. The modern wing rooms read as genuinely special rather than generic five-star, and the art scattered through the corridors, including a piece one guest was convinced was a real Dalí, gives the place a personality most hotels can't fake.

It isn't uniform, and the price makes that worth knowing before you book. Historic-wing rooms draw real complaints for feeling sparse and a little cold next to the new side; one recent guest, fresh off a stay at the Chedi Andermatt, said the rooms had lost their wow factor. The spa's reputation has slipped for some: a couple of reviewers who used to call the staff top professionals now describe them as arrogant and the space overpriced for what it offers, though plenty of others still call it the best in Switzerland. Breakfast buckles on busy weekend mornings, with slow coffee refills, and there's at least one drawn-out billing dispute on record along with a guest who felt brushed off at check-in until a $15k booking was proven. Book the modern wing if you have the choice, and don't expect spa-retreat calm on a Sunday.

None of that changes who this is for. If you want a hotel you could spend a whole weekend inside without leaving, a short shuttle ride from central Zurich, this is still the one people mean when they say the best hotel in Switzerland.
