Book it for the building, the beach, and staff who still remember your name on a fifth visit; skip the restaurants for anything beyond convenience and check what's on the events calendar before you book. On the history and the location, nothing else in Rio is close.

Explora runs like an expedition outfit that happens to have a lodge attached. Groups stay capped at 6-8, guides reshuffle pace and difficulty around whoever's in the van that day, and staff are learning names by the second morning.
