Strengths & trade-offs
Aman Nai Lert Bangkok
Strengths
- Largest standard suites of any luxury hotel in Bangkok, around 90-100 sqm
- Only 52 rooms, producing genuinely private, personalized service when it's working
- Nai Lert House tour and heritage grounds add a sense of place unusual for a city Aman
- Airport meet-and-greet and fast-track immigration consistently praised across stays
- Strong food across Arva (Italian), the omakase counter, and breakfast
Trade-offs
- Concierge and pre-arrival email service repeatedly described as slow and scripted
- Most rooms face condos, a construction lot, or the mall's rear rather than a view
- Service consistency varies noticeably by stay, from flawless to distinctly average
Explora Atacama
Strengths
- Small-group excursions (6-8 people) into secluded parts of the desert most day-trippers never see
- Guides with deep regional knowledge who tailor pace and difficulty to the group
- All-inclusive pricing covers food, drinks, gear and daily explorations
- Staff learn guests' names and preferences within a day or two
- Exclusive access to a private reserve around the Puritama hot springs
Trade-offs
- Rooms are dated and due for renovation, with thin walls that let in plumbing and hallway noise
- Food is consistently described as fine rather than exceptional, sometimes bland
- Handling of serious problems (medical emergencies, vehicle incidents) has been slow and impersonal in a few documented cases
Scoreboard
| Dimension | Aman Nai Lert Bangkok/ 20 | Explora Atacama/ 20 |
|---|---|---|
| Tier | Fat Approved | Fat Approved |
| Overall Fat Score | 16.5Even | 16.5Even |
| Service | 17Even Guests keep naming GM Ted Tucker greeting arrivals personally, but the concierge team has drawn separate complaints about slow, copy-pasted answers to simple questions. | 17Even |
| Design | 18+3 Jean-Michel Gathy's suites run twice the size of most Bangkok luxury rooms, built around the Nai Lert family's old garden and heritage house. | 15 |
| Location | 14.5 Central Sukhumvit puts you between Siam and Thonglor and near Central Embassy, but several guests say the actual outlook is condos, a vacant lot and traffic that turns a 6km ride into 40 minutes. | 19+4.5 Sitting inside the Atacama desert with its own access to the Puritama springs and guided routes to Valle de la Luna and the geysers, guests consistently note it avoids the crowds found elsewhere. |
| Dining | 17+2.5 Breakfast and the Italian restaurant Arva get singled out repeatedly, though one guest's Teppanyaki dinner arrived with courses out of order and a cold main. | 14.5 Most guests call the food good to excellent, but a recurring minority, including repeat Explora travelers, describe it as bland or mid compared to the other lodges in the group. |
| Wellness | 17.5+2 The spa, pool and gym are repeatedly called some of the best in the city, with the Heritude treatments and hot tub singled out as highlights. | 15.5 The massages get called out as excellent by guests who tried them, but there's no gym on site and the desert hiking and biking are the only workout on offer. |
The Verdicts
Aman Nai Lert Bangkok
The rooms are the biggest suite category in Bangkok by a wide margin, the Nai Lert Park grounds feel like nowhere else in the city, and when the staff are on, they're properly on: a birthday proposal kept secret for months, a doctor and soup sent up unasked, honey-lemon tea appearing before a guest finishes coughing at breakfast. That's the case for booking at $1,200-1,800 a night.
Most rooms face condos, a construction lot, or the back of the Central mall, and only Premier and higher categories escape it. The concierge and pre-arrival email service is the other problem worth pricing in, flagged repeatedly by guests and travel advisors alike, some of whom now actively manage around it. Reports since the rough April 2025 opening still swing between frictionless stays and frustrated ones, so which week you land plays a real role.
Book it if you've done Bangkok before and want distance from the river hotels without giving up scale of room, and go Premier Suite or above, never the entry Deluxe. First-timers chasing atmosphere are better served on the Chao Phraya. Get the room and the timing right, and nothing else in the city matches the space.
Explora Atacama
Explora runs like an expedition outfit that happens to have a lodge attached. Groups stay capped at 6-8, guides reshuffle pace and difficulty around whoever's in the van that day, and staff are learning names by the second morning. Robert tailored four days of hiking and biking around a couple's fitness level; Mattias and his driver David got singled out for how easily they ran a multi-day desert crossing. Everything (food, drinks, gear, the daily explorations, plus access to a private reserve around the Puritama hot springs that day-tour operators in San Pedro can't reach) is bundled into the rate, so once you're in, nothing gets nickel-and-dimed.
The rooms are the catch. Guests, some on repeat visits, describe thin walls that let plumbing, hallway radios and next-door arguments straight through, and a refresh has been discussed for a while with no date attached. Travelers who've also done Tierra Atacama nearby say plainly that its rooms are newer. The food splits opinion: plenty call it excellent, others land on fine-to-bland, which tracks with a place whose energy clearly goes into the excursions, not the kitchen. There's also a smaller set of harder accounts worth knowing: a stuck vehicle at 4,200 meters with guests left to hitchhike back, and a medical-emergency cancellation met with dozens of unanswered calls before the policy softened. Most stays never touch that.
Book this for the desert itself, not the room you sleep in. Travelers wanting sharper design in the same landscape tend to look at Tierra Atacama. But for guides who actually know the terrain and a schedule built around moving through it, nothing nearby matches it.

Still torn between Aman Nai Lert Bangkok and Explora Atacama?
We're Sofie and Nicolas, the two of us behind Fat Voyage — and we've stayed in hotels like these ourselves. Tell us what the trip is and we'll tell you which one we'd book, and why. We're not a booking service, but a few times a year we plan one properly for someone; if that's what you're after, say so.
You'll be dealing with the two of us the whole way through, which is why we only take on a handful of trips at a time — if we're full, we'll say so. We reply by email, usually within one working day. The hotel pays us, not you: your rate is the same as booking direct, and the perks come on top.
