Amilla puts you inside the Baa Atoll biosphere reserve, and that's the reason to book before anything else: manta rays a short boat ride out, a house reef you can swim into straight from an overwater villa, and Hanifaru Bay in range for the right season. The villas are genuinely huge by Maldives standards, and people who've stayed at several resorts keep singling out the treetop and sunset overwater categories for feeling different from the standard glass box on stilts. The butler system is doing real work here: one traveler's guide handled a birthday surprise for their daughter and rerouted a whole week around shifting weather; another had a lost book turned up on the beach. Names like Asad, Hajar and Baddy turn up constantly attached to specific favors, not just warm adjectives.

Where it costs you: this is not a cheap half-board resort dressed up as one. Guests report seaplane transfers running over €1,000 a person, a dolphin trip that saw no dolphins and still ran about €500 for two, and wine substitutions on the bill that nobody flagged before pouring. A caterpillar problem tied to the island's greenery caused real skin reactions for at least two travelers in one stretch, and the resort's own $400 credit response to one of them landed as thin given what happened. Rooms in some categories are starting to show wear, which the resort seems to know, since a refurbishment was already underway by early 2026. None of this is universal: most stays here run smoothly, but it's worth knowing the range before you land.

Book Amilla for the reef access and the level of individual care that shows up in specific, repeated acts of attentiveness rather than a script. Families do particularly well here, with a kids' club staff members are remembered by name for, and football and tennis programs that keep older kids occupied. Skip it if you want an all-inclusive rate with no surprises on the final bill; go in expecting à la carte pricing on top of half-board and you'll have a better week than the couple who didn't.

There's no faking a 1743 palace floating in the middle of a lake, and that's really the whole case for the Taj Lake Palace. The boat transfer, the rose petals and ceremonial umbrella at the jetty, a flutist at breakfast: this is the sequence that shows up trip after trip, and it's the one thing here nothing else can copy. One guest who has stayed at several of India's converted palaces made a useful point: you can build a palace-style hotel anywhere with modern techniques, but a converted palace lives in a specific time and place. Across the water, the newer Leela wins on room size and polish; nobody who's done both thinks it wins on that feeling.

That same comparison explains the complaints. Rooms and bathrooms run genuinely small, and one guest in late 2025 described tiny, musty rooms with bathrooms barely bigger than an airplane's, worn worst where the lake meets the building. Dining splits opinion: plenty of guests call the courtyard and rooftop meals unforgettable, but just as many flag pricing that outruns the food, including one diner at Bhairo pushed toward a $350 bottle of wine with no sommelier to justify it, on a menu fixed at $150 a head. A few recent stays also mention staff asking for named reviews mid-meal, in one case the head chef and manager handing over their own cards at dinner, which cuts against the warmth everyone else describes. And once you're on the island, you're on it: little reason, or way, to leave before checkout.

Book it for the history and the setting, not for a modern five-star room or a food-first trip. This is a once-in-a-while splurge rather than a hotel you'd return to for the food or the finishes, but for that arrival by boat and that first sight of white marble on Lake Pichola, nothing else in Udaipur touches it.
